  1. Create effect very similar to amphetamines – by blocking presynaptic reuptake of biogenic amines (i.e. dopamine)
    1. dopamine receptors are blocked by antipsychotics and haloperidol
      1. toxicity of haloperidol may cause Parkinsonian type symptoms
      2. neuroletpic malignant syndrome may be caused by use of haloperidol and is thought to be due to a hypodoaminergic state induced by the drug
        1. symptoms: motor symptoms like akinesia, mutism, tremor, muscle rigidity, hyperthermia, altered consciousness
        2. treatment: stop antipsychotic, may give dantrolene, bromocriptine or amantadine
