- Indwelling vascular catheters are the second leading cause of nosocomial septicemia in the ICU after pneumonia
- Organisms involved in staph epidermidis (27%), staph aureus (26%), candida (17%), klebsiella-enterobacter (11%)
- There is some evidence that adding short chain fatty acids to TPN formulas decreases the rate of catheter infections (particularly in children), but fungal infections ( Candida albicans, malassezia furfur) are emerging.
- Single lumen lines have fewer infections than multi-lumen lines
