Toxoplasma meningitis drugs

Toxoplasma is an intracellular protozoal parasite that will cause subclinical infections in adults, and severe infections in immunocompromized states ( AIDS, malignacies). Standard treatment: sulfonamides and sulfones; sulfones and sulfonamindes synergize with inhibitors of dihydroflate reductase (important because sporzoans such as toxoplasma must synthesize their own folate in order to survive)

    1. pyrimethamine
    2. sulfadiazine
    3. leucovorin (adjuvant)
    4. instead of sulfadiazine: dapsone, trimetrexate, clindamycin, spiramycin - can be tried
    5. instead of pyrimethamine: amphotericin B, fluconazole can be tried.
